I still wouldn't recommend it to very young kids. The art puts some people off, but if you enjoy that or can get past that then IMO it's the best of the bunch as well as being f2p friendly and the most stable in terms of $ and in game population. I'll add a couple.
Solforge is really fun, I wish it had more players. You keep all cards from draft and you can get lots of daily rewards, almost enough for a draft every day PLUS some 'dust' PLUS a pack. Till now i ve seen a bit of shadowverse and eternal and they both look great. Still as you already mentioned shadowverse s art kinda keeped me away from it.
But then i tried eternal and the game looks really great. A lot cheaper and more generous than hearthstone, less rng, more in depth strategy and since i was a Mtg player, i really love it. The grass always looks greener on the other side. I tried Shadowverse for 2 days. I loved the Anime Art. I hated everything else. The interface and controls are horrible. The game is complicated with these flip cards. Shadowverse looks more F2P friendly than Hearthstone but you also need more legendary cards.
I always come back to Hearthstone because I think the RNG aspect is a revolution for card games. I also like how you can create cards outside of your deck during a game. Although RNG got killed off by Discover, and Discover-like effects (Adapt). The problem with Hearthstone is the lack of Casual gameplay from a purely gimmick deck-building perspective. Blizzard decided that all gimmicks should be Epic or Legendary. So you're forced into playing Blizzard's forced archetypes.
So Magic the Gathering is probably the best alternative for the joke deck builder. But only if you find a group of casual players who do the same thing. 08:21 AMPosted. Not that im not thankful for HS freebies. But goodness, when I was playing SV (taking a break now) they practically give packs for no reason at all. Which is understandable in that they need to attract players. New expansion? Have 7 packs! Server maintenance?

Why not take 3 packs? Download milestone? You guessed it! 7 free packs for you. Not to mention, just starting the game you get a pretty generous injection of packs. That being said, competitive decks are in fact more dust costly (3 copies of legendaries please). I also felt the game experience was way healthy than HS mostly.

Aggro was less cheesy to play, and games were less snowball-y and swingy. There's no crazy RNG and over the top mechanics.
I don't hate HS, but SV is a really good experience once you get going. I returned to HS because the current meta is playable for me, though I really would go back to SV if I had the time (a new expansion just dropped and im not in the mood to catch up yet). To OP: If you can get used to the art, I think its really worth it.

I'm pretty sure the game is on its way to dying too. I played it and had a good deal of fun; however, if you're easily frustrated with RNG in HS, that game can have it in spades too. I also used to play Might & Magic Duel of Champions which got discontinued-that was a great game in its prime but Ubi's quick to pull the plug on anything that's not financially performing well (Assassin's Creed: Recollection is still the best digital CCG I've ever played and Ubi killed it before it got to the second expansion). I haven't seen anyone mention Shadow Era, that's still kicking and has a lot of content because it's been around as long as Hearthstone. Hex and Eternal are MTG clones but I think Eternal's the better game because Hex has quite the paywall to playing competitively whereas if you're halfway decent at Arena you can do well in Eternal's draft format and get A TON of cards that way. If you have the time to grind out story content and daily missions, then Shadowverse will keep you entertained. The game is very generous with freebies and rewards, so it's more than possible to scrape together a servicable deck that can climb the lower ranks.
Plus, the game has an ACTUAL story mode for every class that you can clear with the default decks, which is free to play for everyone who downloads the game! Of course, once you hit AA rank, then you're going up against the hardcore Asian players with hyper-optimized decks worth several hundred dollars each, and that's where the fun starts to wane a bit unless you drop cash on packs.
